"IF YOU THINK I LOOK BAD, YOU SHOULD SEE THE OTHER GUY." Just kidding. He's not injured...
Poor Brody. He's had a rough week. It started over the weekend when his persistent allergy cough became much deeper and started to add a little wheeze on top. A lot of our buddies have been sick, so we assumed he'd caught a cold and cozied him up to our panda nebulizer for some albuterol. I called and made an appointment to see Dr. John on Monday and he confirmed that Brody was wheezing. He told us to continue with the nebs, start benadryl instead of zyrtec, and call him if things got worse. Well, Monday afternoon he started running a fever. So I called the doctor. No big deal, right? He had a cold, so the virus probably made him have a little fever. Fever could last 3-5 days. Ok. Then, he woke up Tuesday morning with a swollen left eye. It concerned me a little, so I called the doctor again (now keep in mind that I am not one of those mothers that calls at the drop of a hat). I explained the situation to them and they assured me that it was probably pink eye from the virus and we could use some eye ointment to help clear it up. A little nagging voice told me that Brax has had pink eye and it never looked like this, but I pushed that little voice aside and filled the prescription for the eye ointment. Tuesday afternoon, fever up to 101.5 even after tylenol. Little voice starts nagging a little louder, but I explain to Josh that we just need to give the ointment time to work and he will be better in 2-3 days. Josh does not agree. I silently think that he may be right. The idea that he may have cellulitis is tossed around between Josh and me. So, this morning Brody wakes up fever-free. Yeah! Right?? Wrong. By 8:00 fever is back up to 101 and his eye is swollen shut. Little voice starts screaming at me that this is not just pink eye. He's not getting better after two days of fever and, in fact, seems to be a little more irritable. So, I put in my 4th call to the doctor. I insist that we need to be seen by someone because my mommy instinct is telling me so. They agree. So, we see the doctor and it is confirmed that Brody has peri-orbital cellulitis. This is an infection in the tissue around the eye and can be very dangerous if left untreated due to the close proximity to his brain. So, he got an antibiotic injection at the office (which hurt so bad that he cried for 20 minutes) and came home on 10 days of oral antibiotics. Please pray that we see improvement by tomorrow or we'll be back at the doctor. The little guy has had such a tough week and been such a sweet child through it all! Hope that you and yours have had a better one :)

Hey Darci, I am not sure if you rememebr me from Lipscomb, but I occasionally check your blog. Anyways, I was reading about Brody and my youngest son had to have 3 of the Rosphein (spelling??) antibotic shots for 3 days in a row and he too cried FOREVER!! The doctor told me that it is such a painful shot! I sure hope that he is better in the morning and that he does not have to have any more shots!Good luck!

I'm a firm believer in that inner "mommy voice!" So sorry that little Brody has had such a tough time. Praying all of you have a good nite's rest and great improvement in the morning. Please let us know how he is doing when you drop off Brax at school.
Love,
Miss Julie
